Teacher and video classroom activity breaks both modestly increase student physical activity

A cluster randomized trial of 468 elementary students compared teacher-led versus video-delivered classroom activity breaks. Both approaches increased moderate-to-vigorous physical activity by roughly 9 minutes per day, but only about half of intended breaks were actually delivered.

In this cluster randomized trial, 11 elementary schools assigned students to either teacher-delivered activity breaks (5 schools, 192 students) or video-delivered breaks (6 schools, 276 students) over one academic year. Teachers in both groups were trained to lead two 10-minute breaks daily.

Classroom physical activity was measured using accelerometers at baseline and follow-up, and delivery was tracked via a web platform. Both interventions significantly increased moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in the classroom: teacher-delivered breaks increased MVPA by 9.8 ± 15.9 minutes per day and video-delivered by 9.1 ± 15.3 minutes per day (p < 0.001), with no meaningful difference between the two methods (p = 0.43). However, a major limitation emerged: implementation fidelity was low and highly variable in both arms. Teachers delivered only about 50% of the intended daily activity breaks—roughly 40 breaks per teacher per year instead of the planned ~80—suggesting that real-world adherence to the curriculum fell short substantially. The authors concluded that while classroom activity breaks can modestly increase student MVPA, success depends critically on implementation fidelity, administrative support, and system-level infrastructure to sustain the practice.
