Exercise enhances emotion repair through cognitive reappraisal after stress recall
A randomized trial of 134 university students found that 30 minutes of exercise after recalling a stressor led to greater increases in positive emotions and decreases in negative emotions compared to rest, mediated by greater use of cognitive emotion regulation strategies during the exercise.
Researchers randomly assigned 134 university students to one of three 30-minute activities after recalling a personal stressor: exercise, puzzle-solving (active control), or rest (passive control). Emotional intelligence was measured at baseline.
Four emotion types—activated positive, deactivated positive, activated negative, and deactivated negative—were assessed before and after the activity. Cognitive emotion regulation strategies (such as reappraisal and refocusing) were measured immediately after the task. Results showed that exercisers reported significantly higher activated positive emotions and lower activated negative emotions compared to passive controls. Crucially, exercisers employed more cognitive emotion regulation strategies than both control groups, and these strategies statistically explained (mediated) the difference in emotional outcomes. The active control group (puzzle-solving) also boosted positive emotions but did not show the same cognitive regulation effect. Emotional intelligence showed only minor influence on the relationship. A limitation is that this studied only short-term emotion changes in a laboratory setting with recalled (rather than real) stressors in a student sample, so generalizability to older adults or real-world stressors remains unclear.
The study's mechanism matters: exercisers didn't just feel better passively—they used more cognitive strategies like reappraisal (reinterpreting the stressor's meaning) and refocusing (redirecting attention away from it). Activated positive emotions (energy, enthusiasm) rose most in the exercise group, while activated negative emotions (anxiety, anger) fell most steeply. Puzzle-solving raised positive mood but did not engage the same cognitive regulation process, suggesting exercise's advantage lies in the combination of activity plus cognitive engagement with the stressor memory. The fact that emotional intelligence had only minor influence is notable: the effect appears robust across different personality profiles. One caveat is that participants exercised while reflecting on the stressor; whether silent exercise or exercise unrelated to the stressor produces the same cognitive regulation effect is unknown.
