A randomized controlled trial of 178 working adults found that a smartphone app (Neurum) delivering cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and self-regulation exercises over 4 weeks significantly reduced depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms compared to control, with the largest benefit in stress reduction.

Work-related stress is a major risk factor for mental disorders and poor well-being. This randomized controlled trial tested a smartphone app called Neurum in 201 working adults (mean age 34.6 years); 178 completed the study.

Participants in the intervention group (n=81) were encouraged to log mood journals, complete mental health exercises, and provide feedback over 4 weeks, while the control group (n=97) received no intervention. The app delivered cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness exercises, and self-regulation practices in real-time. Outcomes were measured using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). After 4 weeks, the intervention group's DASS-21 scores fell by 14.5 points (mean difference -14.518), while the control group's scores rose by 3.3 points (mean difference +3.319; F=59.358, P<0.001, effect size η²=0.252). Stress reduction showed the strongest effect: intervention group declined 6.7 points versus control group increased 2.0 points (F=64.679, P<0.001). On average, participants completed 6.3 exercises and 9.7 mood logs, engaging 4.95 minutes daily. A significant limitation was higher dropout from the intervention group (20.6%) than control (2%), suggesting engagement challenges. The study establishes the app's effectiveness for workplace mental health in a non-clinical, working population.
