Short sleep duration linked to higher obesity risk in children and teens
A meta-analysis of 10 studies found that children and adolescents sleeping less than recommended durations showed 25% higher odds of obesity, with stronger associations in teens.
Researchers systematically reviewed 1,116 articles from five major databases (PubMed, Proquest, Google Scholar, EBSCO, Web of Science) published between 2010 and 2024, ultimately including 10 studies in a meta-analysis examining sleep duration and obesity risk in young people. The combined analysis across all ages showed that short sleep duration was associated with a 25% higher odds of obesity (OR 1.25; 95% CI: 1.12–1.42).
When stratified by age group, children aged 6–12 years who slept less showed 20% higher odds of obesity (OR 1.20; 95% CI: 1.08–1.42), while adolescents aged 13–18 years showed a stronger association with 38% higher odds (OR 1.38; 95% CI: 1.18–1.63). The subgroup analysis suggests the relationship may strengthen during puberty, though the meta-analysis did not specify what constitutes "short" sleep or account for potential confounders such as screen time, diet quality, or physical activity patterns. This evidence base is observational rather than causal, meaning poor sleep and obesity may share common underlying causes rather than one directly causing the other.
The stronger effect in adolescents (38% higher odds) compared to younger children (20% higher odds) hints at developmental windows where sleep timing and circadian rhythm disruptions may matter more—a pattern researchers have attributed to the natural shift toward later sleep schedules during puberty. The 10 included studies were cross-sectional or cohort designs, meaning they measured sleep and weight at one or more time points but cannot prove that sleep loss causes weight gain; reverse causation (obesity disrupting sleep) or shared risk factors (stress, socioeconomic strain) could explain the link. Interestingly, the odds ratio of 1.38 in teens is roughly twice the effect in younger children, suggesting that interventions targeting adolescent sleep might have particular preventive potential. However, the meta-analysis did not report how sleep duration was measured (self-reported vs. actigraphy), study quality ratings, or whether results differed by sex, geography, or other moderators—details that would help clarify whether the association is causal and actionable.
