Mindfulness training buffers stress from AI-assisted athletic performance monitoring

Artificial intelligence is being integrated into athletic training systems, yet its psychological impact on athletes has been understudied. Researchers assigned 160 collegiate athletes to either AI-assisted training or standard training, with half in each group receiving mindfulness training and half receiving none, and measured perceived stress and AI dependence at baseline, week 4, and week 8.

Athletes who received AI-assisted training alone showed increases in both perceived stress and dependence on the AI system over the 8-week period. In contrast, athletes who received mindfulness training alongside AI-assisted training showed substantially reduced stress increases—a finding confirmed by difference-in-differences statistical analysis. Mediation analyses revealed that mindfulness training reduced stress partly by enhancing mindful awareness, and cross-lagged analysis showed that mindful awareness and stress were reciprocally related over time, with improvements in awareness predicting subsequent stress reductions. The study identified a specific source of psychological burden: the continuous algorithmic evaluation inherent in AI performance monitoring systems. One limitation is that the sample consisted only of collegiate athletes, so generalizability to other populations or non-athletic AI-assisted activities remains uncertain.
